Well it's that time of year again where I get to help out with cattle. Sunday night, Logan and I were deciding what to do. Did we want to stay home for the rest of the night or go to Aberdeen and eat. Well we decided Aberdeen. Logan said that he had to take a load of open cows up tonight when we went and then he would take the second load up the next day. Of course, since this was decided, he talked me into helping him sort the open cows and heifers. If I did this then Logan would take me out to supper. Sweet!
Well sorting was quite the process, but we got it done. First, I had to follow Logan out to the corn field (because that's where the cows/heifers were at) on the 4-wheeler and Logan took the tractor with the feed wagon. Once we got out to the field, we switched and I was in charge of driving the tractor up to the lots to get the cows back in their lot. Once that was done, we moved them from their lot to another lot and then into a small alley. From there, I was on gate duty. Logan either said cow or heifer and I had to swing the door the right way. This went well and I didn't mess up, so I didn't get in trouble!!
From there, Logan backed up the stock trailer and we moved half of the cows through to get loaded up to go to town. The cows went about half way but they did not want to go into the trailer. So this involved Logan and I yelling at them and hitting their butts to make the move. That still didn't work. Logan let them back out to try it again and then they went right in the trailer! Good girls!!
Here I am driving the tractor while the cows follow me to their lot.
Farm Girl Tip # 58: Always help get the cattle loaded up to go to town and you will get to go out for supper! :) What a deal!!
