Pinkie

Yesterday, Logan and I finally went out to see my cow with the pink ear tags!!  We took a bucket of corn with us to get the cows to come up to us (hoping to get pinkie to come up to us too).  We rode out on the 4-wheeler and Logan started dumping corn in different spots for the cows to eat.  Most of the herd came up to us, but Miss Pinkie wasn't so sure about all of this.  Actually, she really wasn't sure about me since it was the first time she met me.

Here is part of the herd eating while Miss Pinkie stands far away all by herself!

She is still so cute with her pink tags, but she just needs to warm up to me!

Farm Girl Tip # 63: Always go out and see your cow with pink ear tags so she can get warmed up to you and like you!!

Welcome to the Farm

Well Christmas is over, and I hope everyone had a wonderful time with family and friends.  I spent Christmas Eve with my family and Logan, and spent Christmas day with Logan's family.  I had stopped at the farm after coming back from Watertown to meet Logan, open our gifts and head up to his parent's place.  Who knew that the 15 minutes I spent at home before going to the next Christmas could be so exciting and life changing!!

I had pulled into the driveway, grabbed my duffel bag in one hand and a box of gifts in the other.  I walked into the house and it looked like Logan wasn't here.  His pickup was outside so I knew he had to be around here somewhere!! I set the box down on the table and Logan came around from the corner.  I said hi to him and walked to the bedroom to put my bag down.  Logan was talking to me and following me as I walked down the hallway to the bedroom.  I dropped my bag in the bedroom and turned around. All I saw was Logan on one knee asking me to MARRY HIM!! OMG!! I was shocked and couldn't believe what I was actually seeing! Of course I said yes, and we continued on out the the tree where Logan opened his gifts from me including long johns and thermal socks! HAHA!!

Here is my Christmas present!!

Here is our first picture as an engaged couple!

Farm Girl Tip # 62: There is no tip, just welcome to the farm for the rest of my life!! :)

She's Pink

If you have been following my blog for a while, you know that last year around Christmas time, I bought myself a pink ear tag because I wanted Logan to put the tag on one of his cows.  Well, it took a whole year before that pink ear tag got put to good use! I finally have a cow that has pink ear tags!!

The night before Logan went to go get all of these cows, I had to make all of the ear tags.  I came to mine and I didn't know what to put on it.  I thought gems, hearts, and stars might be the way to go, but I didn't really feel like being the odd ball out.  I ended up putting a number on it just like all of the other tags, but I added a few touches of my own!

They look nice don't they?!

Before Logan went up to get these cows, I told him that I had to have the cutest looking one.  I preferred a baldie because they always have really cute calves! :) So here is my new pet with pink ear tags............

How cute is she?!! Those pink ear tags sure make her look good!

Farm Girl Tip # 60: If you ever want a cow with your favorite color of ear tags, just keep asking for it and a year later it will happen!

Farm Girl Tip # 61: Since this pink ear tag dilemma has been accomplished, I think I need a different color!  Shhhh....don't tell Logan, but my next step is to get a purple ear tag in the herd!

Sale

'Tis the season for sale barns!
Logan had to drag me along with him yesterday to look at a few heifers.  I was really planning on doing nothing yesterday but bake, bake, bake! About 10 minutes before we had to leave, he told me lets go! We have a sale to go to!
--He is really lucky I can get ready in 10 min!!--

We got there, and were only there for about 30 minutes and decided to leave! So much for my full day of baking!!

Farm Girl Tip # 59: Don't plan on having a whole day of baking because you will probably get drug along to the sale barn!

If You Help Me...I Will Buy You Supper

Well it's that time of year again where I get to help out with cattle.  Sunday night, Logan and I were deciding what to do.  Did we want to stay home for the rest of the night or go to Aberdeen and eat.  Well we decided Aberdeen.  Logan said that he had to take a load of open cows up tonight when we went and then he would take the second load up the next day.  Of course, since this was decided, he talked me into helping him sort the open cows and heifers.  If I did this then Logan would take me out to supper. Sweet!

Well sorting was quite the process, but we got it done.  First, I had to follow Logan out to the corn field (because that's where the cows/heifers were at) on the 4-wheeler and Logan took the tractor with the feed wagon.  Once we got out to the field, we switched and I was in charge of driving the tractor up to the lots to get the cows back in their lot. Once that was done, we moved them from their lot to another lot and then into a small alley.  From there, I was on gate duty.  Logan either said cow or heifer and I had to swing the door the right way.  This went well and I didn't mess up, so I didn't get in trouble!!

From there, Logan backed up the stock trailer and we moved half of the cows through to get loaded up to go to town.  The cows went about half way but they did not want to go into the trailer.  So this involved Logan and I yelling at them and hitting their butts to make the move.  That still didn't work.  Logan let them back out to try it again and then they went right in the trailer! Good girls!!

Here I am driving the tractor while the cows follow me to their lot.

Farm Girl Tip # 58: Always help get the cattle loaded up to go to town and you will get to go out for supper! :) What a deal!!

Mouse Issues

Well, I know I haven't posted in a few days, but I have been busy with mouse problems!  It all started about a week ago when I went into the spare bedroom where I kept my clothes.  My clothes had been lying on the bed that was in the room because the closet was gross and I didn't want to put my clothes in there.  That Monday, I had gone into the spare bedroom to get a shirt, and I had noticed that there was thread laying around my clothes, and the shirt I was looking at HAD A HOLE IN IT! I instantly got mad and was ready to poison some mice!!!  I instantly started moving all of my clothes from the spare bedroom into the normal room because those dang things were EATING MY CLOTHES!!!  During my move, I found a few other items that the mice had decided to eat, including my pants that I had just bought a few weeks back!! UGHHHH! I moved all of my clothes and found that the mice had been storing their poison pellets I had been feeding them under all of my clothes!!  Stupid things! I thought I was killing them because all of the poison was disappearing, but instead they decided to mess with me and hide it! This was the breaking point for me.  All of the stuff in that room was going to be moved and I was going to take care of this mouse problem!

When I was in Aberdeen that day, I stopped at Menards to buy a plug-in mouse repeller.  This plug-in plugs into the wall and sends off a very high pitched noise that only mice can hear.  This sends them insane and gets them out of your house.  So I instantly buy 2.  One to put in the living room, and one in the bedroom.  A few days after plugging these in, ALL of the poison I had set out was gone.  Like the poison plates had been licked gone!  Alright, so I was thinking that this was a good sign! It was working!

A few days later, I was at Runnings getting Josie dog food and I decided to step foot in the mice aisle.  I ended up buying another plug-in repeller and more poison.  This new plug-in was one that sends a signal throughout the entire house.  It goes through the wiring in the walls to get the mice out of the walls.  I get home, plug this thing in, set out my poison pellets and wait watch some mice die! Well that did and did not happen.  Tonight I opened up the silverware drawer to find mouse chew marks on a plastic spoon. I looked at Logan and said you have got to be kidding me!!!  I pulled out all of the silverware and utensils I want to use and set them on the counter to be washed and put away somewhere else that is MOUSE PROOF!!!  UGH! I decided I am going to buy a 3 drawer container to put all of my silverware in! (TAKE THAT MICE!)

But that was not the end of my night!! I decided to update my blog with this story, and so I was went to take a few pictures to upload with this story.  I walked into the spare bedroom where my clothes used to be and guess what! A DEAD mouse! Laying on the floor, knocked out cold! BOOYAH! Another mouse down! Only a questionable amount left to go......

My solution to this problem is to a) get a snake, b) burn the house down, or c) make a movie like Mouse Hunt so I can get millions to GET OUT OF HERE!!

This is the room where my stuff was at (with the dead mouse on the floor if you look hard...its kind of like wheres Waldo)

And where it is now:

And here is the one mouse I poisoned!

Farm Girl Tip # 56: If you have mice in your house, move all of your clothes so they can't eat them.

Farm Girl Tip # 57: You will probably go broke buying things to get rid of mice, but you have to be smarter than the mouse! (Which can be really hard!!!)

Tags Tags Tags

Well folks, the time has come again for ME to make ear tags for the cows! Logan had gotten all of the ear tags, and I had to get the ink marker because he forgot! As I was getting ready to go to school for the day, Logan said don't let me forget that WE have to make tags tonight.  I said, Ok, put the marker on the table so we don't forget.  I got home that night, and on the table I see two different colors of ear tags and the ink marker.  After supper Logan says, will you make my ear tags for me? HMMM--I asked him what I get for making the tags.  He came up with nothing, but I did it anyways! (I am such a nice girl!!) I suggested that I see a few pink ear tags out there for me making his ear tags.  I think next time I have to make ear tags, I will buy myself a pink ear tag and just make one of my own!!

Here are a few pictures from the tag festivities!

Like I said, there should be a pink one in this pile!!
P.S. Your welcome Roger! :)

Farm Girl Tip #55: Always make ear tags because you will get your way someday!! (A pink ear tag) And do it because you have better handwriting and it makes the cows look good!!

Finishing Up

Well, harvest is almost over but I did get to ride along for one last time this year.  I got to ride in the Pete back and forth to town to dump grain.  Here are a few pictures from my adventures.

Then, as the grain cart was giving us a load to go to town, I look out my window and see a coon hanging out from a box in the grain cart.  I look at Logan who is outside, and point.  He just shakes his head.  Ok. So when he gets in the truck I ask him why there is a coon hanging out on the tractor.  He tells me they shot some the other day and there is some guy that takes the coons for their fur or something so they have to keep them.  Ok- Only on the farm!!

And finally, to end my day, Logan and I took a few Christmas pictures with our dog in the field.  Here is a little sneak peek.  She hated every minute of wearing this bow!!

(Isn't she cute?!)

Farm Girl Tip #54: When harvest is coming to a close, go out for one last ride because you have to wait a year to do it again!

You and Me Go Pickin' In The Dark

Well, the title says it all.  I got to go pickin' in the dark a few nights ago.  There is just something about being out in the field that is so relaxing and peaceful, even at night!

Farm Girl Tip #53: If you ever need a place to go after a long day, this is the place to be!

Welcome Home!

Well the cows are back home from the pasture.  They are happy as can be out in the corn fields eating and becoming fat! I drove by them the other day and they are out there just chomping away with smiles on their faces! They love this time of year because it is the best food they get to eat all year! (I know this because I go out and talk to them).

Farm Girl Tip #52: When the cows get to come home to eat in the corn field, they are the happiest animals ever!

Playing Farm Girl

Well tonight I was a lucky duck and got to play farm girl.  First off, Michelle calls me and asks me where I am at.  She was wondering if I could help move everything back home from Groton.  I told her I would be home in about 20 min or so.  I get close to home and I call her to see if they still need my help.  She says yes, just go home and the guys have a plan that someone will meet me there.  Just go home.  So home I go.  I get there and there is no one there waiting for me, so I go inside and change.  Logan calls me and says take my work pickup and drive up to his mom and dads house.  Off I go.  I get about 1/4 mile down the road and Michelle calls and says don't worry about coming up here, we don't need you anymore.  So I turn around and go back home.  It is about 6:45 and I decide I'm kind of hungry so I start making supper.  Not even 3 minutes later, Logan calls me and says that Rick (the hired man) needs stuff out of the service truck. UGHH! All I want to do is EAT!! So back outside I go, drive the service truck up to Rick and sit there for a solid 30 min.  7:15 rolls around and FINALLY I get to go home and (hopefully) stay there! Sure enough, I get home and......the guys show up and are done for the night!

Here I am playing farm girl driving the service truck around for the night.

And here is my "rig" for the night:

Farm Girl Tip #51: Never plan to just come home and eat supper.  Plan to go inside, come back out and drive, turn around, come back home, go inside, go back out and drive to the field, and eat supper at 8:00.

It's Corn Time

Well you guessed it! It's that time to switch from bean harvest to corn harvest.  I witnessed this first hand yesterday.  I have always known that farmers haul their corn/bean head around on a long, narrow trailer.  But how do they get it on there?  Well here's how! They do some unhooking of stuff to detach the head from the combine.  Then the driver of the combine raises the head up, puts it over top of the trailer, and lowers it onto the trailer.

Here is Logan doing the duties of putting the bean head onto the trailer.  For the record, Logan was thrilled that I was taking this picture.  After I took the picture, I looked at him and he was shaking his head at me.  Hey, you gotta do what you gotta do to keep the blog up and running!!

After the guys took the bean head off, put the corn head on, and moved fields, it was time for corn! Here are a few pictures from the beginning of corn harvest!

Farm Girl Tip #49: Take pictures of everything that is new to you even if you get the look and the head shake.

Farm Girl Tip #50: If you are ever stressed out from school or an upcoming test, go out to the field to enjoy harvest and the beauty that God gave us to look at.  It is so relaxing and peaceful!

Screws

What happens when you try to make your house look all festive, but you live in South Dakota where the winds never stop blowing? Your corn husk decorations fall over of course!! The only way to fix this problem is to somehow wire the corn stalks to something.  And what is that something? A screw of course!! There are just a few steps you take to fix this problem.

1. Obtain an old house that no one cares about.
2. Find a few screws, wire, and power tools.
3. Use your power tools and screw the screw into the side of the house!!
4. Wire your corn stalks onto the screw.
5. Your corn stalks will stay standing! (That is of course until the wind blows 35 mph and your corn stalks fall over because you didn't do a good enough job.)

Farm Girl Tip #48: If you want your decorations to stay standing up, just put a few screws in the side of your house! Problem solved.

We Are Festive!

Well I decided that I needed something festive for fall outside to dress up the gross old farm house a bit.  I decided the answer was some pumpkins, corn stalks, and straw bails.  Logan and I were up in Aberdeen last night and I made him stop at WalMart so I could get some pumpkins since the pumpkin patch in Watertown wasn't open when I was there! (BOO!!)  After being sick and tired of sitting on the couch this afternoon, Logan and I went over to the neighbors house to get a few straw bales, stopped to cut a few corn stalks, and waaaalaaa! Your house is decorated for fall!!

Farm Girl Tip # 47: If you have a gross old farm house, get some pumpkins, corn stalks, and straw bales to deck it up a bit for fall!

Here Kitty Kitty

A few weeks ago, Logan pointed out a cat that we had that roams around the yard.  I assumed that this cat was around because it is eating all of the mice! Well, the other day, I was getting ready to go out to supper and I looked out the window and I see a cat in the bushes.  I said to Logan- Oh look! Our cat is back! I acted like a 3 year old and sat at the window and watched the cat as it came out of the bushes and walked around close to the tall grass.  I watched as this cat would walk, then stop and look like it was ready to pounce! (It was going to pounce MICE!)  As the cat came out of the grass a little more, I realized that it was a different cat than the one that Logan told me about a few weeks back! That means we have 2 cats roaming the yard for mice!! (Hence why I haven't had many mice in the house this year!!) Score for the cats, even though I hate cats!  They can stay though, as long as they don't become my friends.

Here is my mouse catcher.

Farm Girl Tip # 46: If you have mice in your house, invite the stray cats over to take care of the problem.  They will! Just don't become friends with them because cats are gross!

Carrying On The Tradition

This past weekend I was at Logan's parents house when we were all sitting around talking about pies.  I had decided that I wanted a pumpkin pie, and I also decided that I should make an apple pie for my parents when I go home this weekend!  Well that thought of making an apple pie turned into ME being the one to learn how to make the pie!

Logan's grandma, aunt, mom, and I decided to make a mess in the kitchen while the guys were out combining.  Logan's mom, Michelle, insisted that I learn how to make a pie from scratch since she didn't want to carry on the tradition.  So I did what I was told and learned how to make a pie from scratch so I could carry on the tradition! Here are a few pictures from the weekend.

Farm Girl Tip #45: If you ever get the chance to learn how to make a pie, you better do it so you can carry on the pie making tradition!

It's Harvest Time!

Well folks, it's that time of the year again! HARVEST!! The best season of the year! Here are a few snapshots from the beginning of bean harvest!

Josie is a spoiled dog--she gets to ride along!!

Farm Girl Tip #44: Always ride along when you can during harvest! It is such a relaxing and enjoyable ride!

Knock Knock Moo

Well Friday morning was quite an exciting and chaotic morning.  It all started at 1 am when I woke up to go to the bathroom.  We had the windows open because it was cool out and we were letting some fresh air in.  I woke up to use the bathroom and as I was walking to the bathroom I hear MOOO (REALLY LOUD)! It scared the crap out of me, but I did my business and went back to bed.  I heard Logan rolling around so I said Hey- I think you have a calf out.  He says, yea I heard it too. Ok, so we went back to sleep.  About 6:30 that morning I start to hear this knock.  I'm not sure if I'm dreaming or if it is real.  I sort of wake up and ask Logan if someone is knocking.  I don't know he says, so he goes out to check.  Sure enough there is a man standing at the door and he asks Logan if he has cattle.  Logan says yeah, why? The man says, they are all out and all over the place.  They are heading towards the highway.  CRAP!!! So he says thanks and runs to get his work clothes on.  I jump out of bed and get my work clothes on and out the door we go.

We go outside and everywhere you look there are calves. 1/4 a mile down the road, out in the bean field, in the backyard, in the front yard, and eating out of the bunks on the wrong side of the fence with the other calves. 100 calves out of their pen and dispersed throughout the country is not really what I wanted to deal with this morning!!

Logan hops on a 4-wheeler and starts to bring the ones by the highway back home.  Me, not knowing there is another 4-wheeler here, am running around trying to bring some of them back home.  I had called backup while Logan is rounding these stinkers up, and they were on their way.  Logan had brought the majority of the ones around the farm back and we put them back in the lots.  Remind you that I have to be to school by 9:00 and it is now 7:20.  I tell Logan, do you care if I go get ready? Will you be ok here by yourself? Yes, ok, so right as I go to head in I notice that Michelle, Logan's mom was in the yard.  She was getting concerned because Roger, Logan's dad, was not here yet.  She quick radio's him to see where he is at.  He replies back and says that he is 3 miles away pushing another 30 calves back home. OMG!!! So I quick run over to Logan and tell him where his dad is at and what is going on.  He says to me, you are going to have to skip school, I NEED your help!

So Logan quick counts the calves that are in the lot.  He jumps on a 4-wheeler and I jump on a 4-wheeler and we head out to help Roger bring these calves back home.  Michelle sits at the corner in a pickup to block so the calves don't go where we don't want them to.  Logan and I meet up with Roger about a mile and a half away from home and push them the rest of the way.  Logan says-once we hit the bean field up here I will have to make sure they don't go in the field.  Well there was no stopping them because they went right into the bean field and they were not coming out.  Logan said that we will just have to let them go and they will hear the other ones so they will go home.

Ok, so I said well do you still need my help or can I go home and quick get ready to make it to school on time? Remind you it is now 7:50.  Yes, I can go.  So I ride the 4-wheeler home, go inside, find something nice to wear, throw my hair in a pony tail, make my breakfast, throw stuff in my bookbag and out the door I go.  (It's a good thing I can get ready in 10 min!!) And that was my morning! HOW EXHAUSTING and it was only 8:00!!!

P.S. My teacher would have been real pleased with me if I would have called him and said I can't make it to tutoring because I am putting calves back in! HAHA!

Here is the one and only picture I got of the action.  I was too into the heat of the moment or there would have been more pictures!  This was when we were trying to get them back in-some did not want to go back in!!

Farm Girl Tip #42: If you ever hear a knock at your door at 6:30 in the morning, either A, the cops are at your door, or B, your calves are out.  Option B is most likely the answer!

Farm Girl Tip #43: If you ever want to let all of your anger out, just let your calves out so you can put them back in. TRUST ME, your anger will be ALL GONE by the time they are all back in!

Round 'Em Up, Cowgirl

There is never a dull moment around the farm! Let me repeat myself, There is NEVER a dull moment around the farm!! This morning was one of those mornings!

Logan had left early this morning to go up to one of the pastures to see if he could find a few cows that are missing.  I, of course, slept in! Logan called me around 9:00 this morning and told me that he was on his way back.  He was going to check a few crops and told me that I should make breakfast because he was hungry.  I get up and started walking out to the kitchen.  I had forgot my phone in the bedroom so I went back to get it and when I went back I happened to look out the window.  When I looked out I see 3 calves walking in the backyard.  I watch them for a few seconds and then they start to run.  I run into the office to see where they are going and they are already on the gravel road and starting to head North.  I quick call Logan and tell him that he has 3 calves out. He tells me to go outside, get the 4-wheeler (which is on the trailer) and bring them back so they don't get into the corn fields.  Ok. So I quickly put on sweatpants, slip on my nike sandals, and out the door I go.  I get around the corner of the shed, and all I see is a gate that is laying on the ground and calves EVERYWHERE! (Insert swear word here!!)

I quickly get my phone out (luckily I brought it out with me) and call Logan.  I tell him that the gate is on the ground, calves are everywhere and there are only about 10 calves left in the lot.  (Remind you that there are 90 total calves out there right now--THANK GOD the rest of them aren't back yet!!)  I tell Logan--I can't do this myself! Is Rick (the hired man) around? I NEED HELP!! He says ok, try and keep them out of the corn fields, I will round up some help.

I get off the phone and realize that my sweatpants and nike sandals are not going to cut this job.  I run back into the house, throw on jeans, socks, and my cowgirl boots.  I run back outside and over to the trailer with the 4-wheeler.  I undo the pins, put the ramp down, start the 4-wheeler up and off I go.  I bring the 4-wheeler around the shed and all I see is about 15 calves walking through the backyard, going to the road, and heading North.  I slam on the gas and get the 4-wheeler in front of the calves, turn around and start pushing them back home. While I am pushing them back to where they belong, 30 more calves are already heading towards me.  I get off the 4-wheeler and start walking towards them pushing them back.

By this time, Rick and his son have showed up and are now helping me push the calves back into the lots.  Now, to put them back in, they have to walk along a fence line, through billions of trees and weeds, turn the corner and then they can go back into the lot.  So Rick, his son, and I are walking through these trees pushing the calves back.  While we are walking, Logan shows up and takes the 4-wheeler to try and find the 3 calves from the beginning that I had to let go otherwise I would have had a disaster!  Rick and his son keep pushing all of the calves back towards the lots, and I go stand in the gap by the gate so they can only go into the lots.  They all come out of the trees from the side we want them to and walk into the lots.  That is until a few come out from behind me.  Rick and I quickly move so they go in the gap that I was blocking.  Rick's son stands at the other end where they are supposed to come out at so they can't go back through the trees again.  Long story short, after about 40-45 min, all of the calves are back in the lot safe and accounted for.  Oh, right after we had all of the calves in, Roger and Shay (Logan's dad and brother) show up to help. Sorry boys, work is done!

The guys fixed the gate and off everyone went.  I was inside before Logan, and when Logan came in I said, Hey, hows it going? Best day of your life? He just looks at me, smiles, and laughed.  All I have to say is 1. It's a dang good thing I was here to notice all of the calves were out or we would have had a disaster. 2. I think I deserve an award for being cowgirl of the year. And 3. LOOK AT THIS CITY GIRL TO FARM GIRL!!!!

I couldn't get any pictures while this was happening because I was too in the moment, but here are the little turds walking back into the lot for good!

Farm Girl Tip #40: ALWAYS look out your window every morning to see if there are calves in your back yard.

Farm Girl Tip #41: If there are calves in your backyard, go push them back in so you can save the day and be farm girl of the year!

33

Last night, Logan and I were going to go up to Aberdeen for supper.  We walked out of the house and got in the car.  Logan drove over to the calves just to make sure everything was ok before we left.  We pulled up and there was one calf out. Number 33. This calf gets out all the time but wants to go back in when you put him in.  Of course, Logan and I both had jeans and a nice top on because that is what you do when you go to the big city! So we get out of the car, Logan goes behind the calf and starts to push him while I open up the gate.  When I get up to the gate, all of the calves in the lot are coming towards me, but I just open the gate up and walk in.  Logan has walked number 33 over, and he walks right into the lot.  I close the gate, lock it up, and off we go to Aberdeen.

This is what I was wearing when I did all of the work putting the calf back in. This is what REAL cowgirls wear when they deal with cattle!!

Farm Girl Tip #39: Even if you are looking nice to go out to eat, you will probably have to put a calf back in. BEWARE!

Guess Who's Back

This morning, I had left for school and Logan and the hired men were getting things ready to go get the calves.  I got asked this morning if I wanted to skip class and help out with rounding the little guys up.  I declined.  But, when I got back home from school today, my long lost friends were back home!! (And they are not so little anymore!)  Of course, I haven't seen the calves for a while, so I went over to the lot and stood by the fence to say hello.  These calves were pretty curious about me and what I was doing.  They came right over to me and just stared at me.  I must be pretty cute because they did not quit looking at me!!

Of course, they all miss their mommies and make lots of noise so I can't open my windows at night when I sleep.  But, its always nice having the my buddies back on the farm!

(I think I am turning into a real farm girl! I act like these calves are my pets!)

Farm Girl Tip #38: If you are a city person that moves to a farm and you think you will be a city person for a long time, think again! The calves become your pets REAL fast!

Silage Chopping

A few weeks ago, the "new" but old farm girl got to experience the wonders of chopping silage.  If you have never seen this done before, it is quite the experience. Watching the cutter start a row and shoot the silage back into the truck is neat!

Farm Girl Tip #37: If you have a bucket list, this should be on it!! No joke!

'Tis The Season

Wow! It sure has been a busy summer! Farm life has been pretty boring this summer, but now that fall is right around the corner, things are starting to get exciting.

As the seasons change and the weather starts to get cooler, you notice the color change of the crops.  Turning from green to yellow to brown.  'Tis the season for fall!

The other day I had just woken up and I walked out into the kitchen. Lookie what I found!! 'Tis the season!!!

Farm Girl Tip #36: You may be excited for fall to come around, but always remember, there are mice that like to stay warm and come into your house!

Snake Murderer

Wow! It has been awhile since I have last posted! It has been a busy summer so far with not much happening with this farm girl but work and summer classes.  BUT today was a day with some farm action!

I had gone outside to get ready to mow the lawn.  I went in the shed with the lawn mower and tried to start it.  It wouldn't start, so I figured it needed gas.  I walked outside over to the water spicket where the gas can was.  As I was going  to pick up the can, I see a little snake creeping around over by the hoses.  I scream and run away.  BUT then I realize that if I don't kill this thing, I will see it again for the rest of the summer.  So I grab Josie--my dog--to kill it.  She doesn't do a dang thing, just looks at me. UGHHHH! I run over to the shed and grab my gardening shovel.  I run back over to where the snake was and sure enough he is still there hiding under the hose.  I get him out and start chasing him with the shovel, smacking the ground to get it.  The snake goes full force to get away from me, but he's too slow.  I chop him up with the shovel until he is dead! Megan=1, Snake =0

I honestly have no clue where this snake killing came from! I have been SOO scared of snakes for my entire life.  So scared that when I used to mow the lawn at home, if I saw one I would stand on the lawn mower seat and scream.  Chet or the dogs would have to come out and kill it.  Or if I was walking and saw one on the ground I would scream and run full force the other direction.  Like I said, I have NO CLUE where this came from!!

Farm Girl Tip #35: Even if you are deathly afraid of snakes, like me, if you see one, kill it so you will never have to see it again!

The Water Sucker

I came home tonight thinking about what I was going to throw on for supper and what not.  I pulled in, saw the water trailer sitting in the front yard (UGH..) and didn't think anything different.  I came inside the house and was going to clean out my lunch box with a wet rag.  I turned the faucet on annnnnnnd nothing.  NO WATER!! So I search around the freezer for something that I can make that doesn't involve water.  I find a chicken casserole and throw it in the mini pizza oven (because the big oven STILL doesn't work).

I walk outside as Logan is walking over to the house from the field.  I yell and ask him if the water is on for the water truck...OF COURSE IT IS!! With that running, AND the cows drinking, I HAVE NO WATER!! WHY am I always the one that has to suffer??!!!

Between this water sucker and the thirsty cows, it looks like I will have no water for a while!!

Farm Girl Tip # 34: When this thing is in your front yard, you will have no water!! Be prepared!!

In The Field

We are finally out in the field and finished planting corn!! My lucky self got the chance to ride along in the planter with the one and only, Logan Clemensen! Here we are planting away to feed the world!!

Farm Girl Tip # 33: Always ride along when planting because it is entertaining...only for 10 min, so bring something along to do!!
